Albertans in MLB

There are 16 Canadian players on opening day rosters.  From new household names such as defending MVP Joey Votto to those who were around BEFORE the Blue Jays had won a World Series (Matt Stairs).  And these players come from coast to coast, but not a single one of these is from Alberta.  Hopefully this will change in the next few seasons, as the Canadian Baseball Network has released its annual list of Canadians playing college ball, and there are 74 Albertan baseball players on the rosters of schools playing college south of the border.

Our very own Marc David of Calgary has been named Acting RSN Lieutenant-Governor of Alberta. He has set up a Red Sox Nation Alberta Facebook group which I encourage all fans to follow.

There will be occasional events posted there. The first one is a Blue Jays vs. Red Sox watch party at the Melrose cafe in Calgary. This will be the VERY FIRST Red Sox Nation INTERNATIONAL EVENT!!! Come on out and be a part of it.

MUST WIN GAME!

I just did the math.  If we get swept by the Yankees, we will be officially mathematically eliminated from playoff contention.  How can we be eliminated so early, you ask?  Well, we'll be 7 games behind them, with only 7 to go in the 16 game schedule, and they'll have the tiebreaker by beating us head-to-head, so... Wait - what's that you say?  We play 162 games?

Ryan Thompson - From the Prairies to dominating the Northeast-10 Conference

Right handed pitcher Ryan Thompson has a future that is much brighter than those rare summer days in Fort McMurray.

Originally from Calgary, he played ball in Fort McMurray before moving to New Hampshire and playing High School baseball at Souhegan High in Amherst.  He then started his College career at UConn with mixed success.  His highlight was pitching a perfect inning of relief in a win at Hartford, but he ended up only appearing in 5 games, and had a 9.53 ERA.  Subsequently he transferred to Franklin Pierce to play for the Ravens of the Northeast-10 Conference in Rindge, NH.   Things have been looking up ever since!

As a newcomer and just a sophomore, he was designated one of the team’s captains which was “a testament to his leadership qualities”, said Ravens  Coach Jayson King, adding that Ryan “ is one of the hardest working guys on our team and is totally dedicated to pitching and our program”.  And the accolades kept coming.  

The sky is falling!

Look up!  The team that was named 2012 World Champions before the season even started is 0-5!  For those of you who are bad at math, that projects to a 0-162 record over the season  So why aren't more people panicking?  Is it because here in Canada most fans are too busy following the last few days of the ice hockey regular season, to notice that baseball has started?
